Worker Welfare

Today, Saadiyat is home to thousands of workers who live on the island while working on projects being developed by TDIC. It has been a priority for TDIC to make sure that workers are living in respectable conditions, working safely on their projects and are being treated fairly.

LIVING ON SAADIYAT

The Saadiyat Accommodation Village is a high-quality and modern housing community that was opened in 2009. The Village has a broad range of social, recreational and educational facilities for its residents, including multilingual libraries, computer and Internet access, banking facilities, prayer rooms, spacious dining halls, barbershops, food outlets, gymnasiums and a sporting area comprising four cricket pitches and basketball and tennis courts.

Services On saadiyat

Because life away from home is hard, TDIC has introduced services, activities and events for residents at the Village including a free video-calling service with private booths that residents can use to reconnect with their families and talk in private. On a monthly basis, the Village also witnesses sports tournaments for football, cricket, volleyball and basketball games. For the past three years, TDIC has also been working closely with its staff volunteers to offer workers English classes, with graduation ceremonies organised to recognise the students’ achievements. These classes are for all workers and free of charge.

WORKING ON SAADIYAT

To ensure the safety and fair treatment of workers on TDIC projects on the island, strict rules and regulations have been put in place through a document called the Employment Practices Policy. To ensure that the EPP is being implemented, TDIC appointed hired PricewaterhouseCoopers, an independent monitoring company, to ensure its implementation. A dedicated team makes constant visits and interviews at the Saadiyat Accommodation Village and on the site of TDIC projects. These findings are published by TDIC on an annual basis. It is an exercise that helps TDIC make enhancements, penalise breaches of the system and ensure the rights of the workers are sustained.

I like staying here in Saadiyat Village. I don’t even have to cook. We get food and I enjoy it.

Ensuring the Welfare of our Workers

Ensuring the Welfare of our Workers

The welfare, social wellbeing and safety of our workers are of paramount importance to TDIC. To ensure that this is upheld at all times, TDIC has implemented a strict policy to ensure fair employment practices among all workers and contractors who are employed on TDIC's projects.

Our Employment Practices Policy (EPP)

Our Employment Practices Policy (EPP)

In 2009, we launched our Employment Practices Policy (EPP), a series of employee focused initiatives which complements the UAE Labour Law and guarantees the fair treatment of employees while providing a safe, healthy and friendly working environment. With these highly set standards, EPP ensures the safeguarding of all workers, including those employed by our contractors.

The Accommodation Village Contact Centre

The Accommodation Village Contact Centre

In order to enable workers to raise work-related enquiries, report concerns or make suggestions, a dedicated call centre with toll-free direct access lines was established in 2010. The Contact Centre is available to all workers on Saadiyat and supports the majority of languages spoken by the workers, including Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Telugu, Malayalam and Tamil.

I’m actually quite happy in Saadiyat and would like to stay for two or four more years.
